This year, HRA is proud to host its first Youth Leadership Council (YLC). The YLC will consist of approximately 15 to 25 high school students in the City and will inform HRA of how we can make our services more youth-friendly. The YLC is designed to give participating youth the following:
· An opportunity for them to express their thoughts and concerns
· A place to meet and create lasting connections with other youth like themselves
· Training from top-tier leadership organizations such as Coro, on how to be effective and diverse leaders, public speakers, and advocates
· Opportunities to gain community service hours, letters of recommendation, and moments of personal and professional growth
· A guarantee that their voices will be treated with respect by actual NYC officials and policymakers
· A chance to accomplish real changes in the way HRA and its communities work with youth
YOUNG PEOPLE SHOULD JOIN IF:
· They are in 10th or 11th grade
· They are interested in being a voice of change in their community
· They want to make meaningful, lasting connections with other youth
· They want to enhance skills such as leadership or public speaking in a judgment-free area
· They want to gain experience working with the largest social services/governmental organization in NYC
· They want to gain experience for their resume, college applications, and/or gain service hours
COMMITMENT REQUIRED OF YLC PARTICIPANTS:
· A strong desire to improve both themselves and their city
· Commitment to attend at least 1 afterschool meeting per month at HRA’s 4 World Trade Center location from October 2016 through April 2017. The first meeting will be on October 27.
